Many people coming to Germany want to apply for the EU Blue Card visa to work in Germany or any other EU country.
The residence permit is aimed at attracting and enabling highly qualified less developed countries nationals to live in the EU. Authorities in Germany also want to ensure that there are enough skilled workers in many employment sectors without driving up a shortage.
The residence permit comes with a number of benefits for those who contest for it. These include; freedom to move around freely within the EU, the right to request and bring family members to the country they live in, and shortcuts for applying for permanent residency.
Germany EU Blue card salary requirements 2023: Salary thresholds for people coming to Germany
The EU Blue card however has salary thresholds that can make it difficult for Africans in Germany, and other people coming to Germany, to get their hands on a visa.
The local.de reported that this year salary requirements mean a few more people may be able to take advantage of the Blue Card Scheme.

What are the conditions needed to apply for the EU Blue card?
- You must be a graduate: If you did not acquire your degree in Germany, it must either be recognised or comparable to a German degree. Information on the equivalence and recognition of foreign degrees is available here.
- You must have an employment contract or a binding job offer.
- You must have a minimum annual gross salary of 58,400 Euros. A reduced minimum annual gross salary of 45,552 Euros applies to employment in the occupational fields of mathematics, computer science, the natural sciences, engineering and human medicine (not including dentistry) (as of 2023 – the salary thresholds are readjusted for each calendar year).
For instance, a lower salary threshold of 38.688 euros is applied for EU Blue Cards issued to scientists, mathematicians and engineers, as well as to doctors and IT specialists. The BA (Federal Employment Agency) must approve the employment of people in this category. This approval is however not required if the applicant obtained their university degree in Germany. - The employment must match the qualification.

Points to note about the EU Blue card salary requirements:
The lower the salary requirements are a sign that the new government is trying to attract more talent from around the world.
In 2020, the salary requirement for EU Blue Card holders was €43,056 for those in shortage occupations, and €55,200 for workers in other industries and occupations. Before when applying for a Blue Card in Germany in 2022, the applicant had to earn a minimum gross salary (before tax) of €56,400 – down from €56,800 in 2021.
In 2020, the average income in Germany was €47,700 before tax, which corresponds to a monthly gross salary of €3,975 for a full-time job (35 to 40 hours a week is common for full-time in most companies). But there are large differences in earnings between different regions of the country.
