Smartphone without access to WhatsApp from February 2025
WhatsApp has announced that it will stop supporting the KaiOS operating system from February 2025. This means users with phones running KaiOS will no longer be able to use the app, and their chats will be permanently lost. Since cloud backups are not available and the data format is different, transferring chats to a new device will not be possible.

End of support for KaiOS- What’s changing?
Since June 2024, KaiOS users have been unable to create new WhatsApp accounts. Now, from February 2025, they will lose access completely as Meta (WhatsApp’s owner) ends support for the operating system. This means users will no longer be able to send or receive messages, and the app will stop working.
WhatsApp on KaiOS functions differently from Android or iOS, with key limitations:
- No cloud backup – Unlike Android (Google Drive) and iOS (iCloud), KaiOS has never supported cloud storage for chats.
- Incompatible data format – Messages on KaiOS use a different format and encryption, making them unreadable on Android or iOS.
- No transfer options – There is no official or unofficial method to move chat history to another device.
While chat transfer isn’t possible, users can still save some data:
- Multimedia files – Photos, videos, and voice recordings stored in the phone’s memory can be copied to a computer using a USB cable.
- Screenshots – Important messages can be saved by taking screenshots.

What is KaiOS and why is it losing support?
KaiOS is an operating system mainly used in feature phones—basic mobile devices that support essential internet applications. It is especially common in Nokia and JioPhone models. Meta is ending support due to the system’s technological limitations and a small user base.
