A boat carrying an estimated number of three dozen migrants sunk in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Libya on the 13th of June 2020. Reports say that most of the people being ferried were Nigerians. The migrants bound for Italy were on their way to Europe for a search for better opportunities in life when the ship wrecked and led to their death. Spokeswoman for the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), Safa Msehli, said among the missing were two children and that the migrants hailed from Chad, Nigeria, Egypt and Sudan. The shipwreck took place off the coast town of Zawiya which is about 48 Km from Libya’s capital. She added that the migrants had no life jackets, the boat was in poor condition and had capsized shortly after setting off, this is not the first time for such attempts as many migrants in Italy have tried this before.

Alarm phone, an independent support group for people crossing the Mediterranean, received a distress call from a relative of a migrants who fled Libya raising alarm the boat was in distress. However, It is not all bad news as at least 20 migrants have been rescued and returned to Libya.
