A man opened fire with a long gun in a lecture hall in the German University town of Heidelberg leaving one person shot dead and three others injured.

The gunman was a student carrying several firearms who also died during the attack but police said they could not yet confirm the circumstance of his death. BILD reported that the shooter turned the weapon on himself.

Police said that the student had entered the university hall at 12:30 pm while a lecture was ongoing, and opened fire. He subsequently fled the building.

The gun man shot four people and injured during the attack and dpa confirmed that one man had died from her injuries.

Investigators said that the motive to the attack could not be attributed to anything religious or political. The Guardian wrote that police advised people via social media to stay away from the Neuenheimer Feld area of Heidelberg, where the science faculties of the city’s university, the university clinic and the botanical gardens are located. Students were told by email to avoid the area.
