Germany back in lockdown, Merkel is already thinking about an extension, the federal heads of state agree

Germany lockdown extension: Coronavirus numbers are on the rise in Germany. The lockdown is likely to continue. Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) and the federal states want to extend the crown blockade.

There is almost a week to the next coronavirus conference organised by the federal government with the Länder. But Angela Merkel and the state prime ministers are already ready to make an urgent decision to extend the blockade.

The federal and state governments are now specifically considering postponing the planned opening phase. This was reported by the magazine “Business Insider”, which is usually well informed, citing information from government circles, writes Merkur.de.

From 22 March, Länder and regions with an incidence below 50 could make great strides. It could open outdoor restaurants, operas, cinemas, theatres and concerts and maybe put an end to Germany’s lockdown extension.

Contact sports should be possible again outdoors, without contact indoors. With an incidence of seven days * between 50 and 100, certain relaxations should also be considered.

However, customers, guests and participants should test negative quickly.

Now these relaxations could be cancelled and the restrictions extended for another four weeks, after March 28. The growing number of infections and the crisis of AstraZeneca vaccines might make this necessary.

In addition, it is currently questionable whether sufficient rapid corona tests will be available by March 22 to be able to apply the planned openings.

Germany’s coronavirus strategy is faltering: the suspension of the AstraZeneca vaccination has turned plans upside down.

Even the at least temporary break of the AstraZeneca vaccine has hit the German strategy on fighting the coronavirus is hard as Corona numbers continue to rise.

RKI reported 13,435 new coronavirus infections in Germany on Wednesday morning in 24 hours – significantly more than the 9,146 new infections a week ago. The national incidence of 7 days also increased significantly again: from 83.7 the previous day to 86.2. Four weeks ago it was 57.0.

The incidence of 7 days is currently increasing nationally. The worst situation in Germany is in the Greiz district of Thuringia. According to data from RKI, the incidence value has now exceeded 500. The institute reported a 7-day incidence of 525.7 on Wednesday, compared to 490.8 the day before.

Nationally, it is followed by the Saxon Vogtlandkreis (342.9), the Bavarian district of Kulmbach (311.6) and the district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen (311.4) in Thuringia – the only three regions with more than 300. The Cochem-Zell district of Rhineland-Palatinate has the less than 7 days incidence. According to RKI, the value is currently 9.8.

Virologist Christian Drosten predicts a large number of wreaths in Easter Germany.

“Shortly after Easter, we will have a Christmas-like situation,” the scientist at the Berlin Charité clinic said on Tuesday. The proportion of the more contagious British virus, B.1.1.7, is now three-quarters of all new coronavirus infections in Germany.

Drosten expects the situation to become “drastically more difficult” because of the mutant. It will be particularly “complicated” for the largely un-vaccinated age groups over the age of 50. To date, they have not primarily belonged to the Covid 19 risk groups. In Germany, people over the age of 80 are now largely vaccinated.

SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach told ZDF that the third coronal wave “will especially affect those over 50”.
