Eleven new-born babies have died in the neonatal department of a public hospital in Tivaoune, Senegal.

President Macky Sall has expressed his deepest sympathy and through his official twitter account, he tweeted

“I have just learnt with pain the death of 11 new-born babies in the fire that occurred in the neonatology department of the Mame Abdou Aziz Sy Dabakh hospital in Tivaoune”

What caused the fire outbreak in the neonatal department that lead to the death of 11 newborns?

According to the health minister of Senegal, Abdoulaye Diouff Sarr, the fire was caused by short circuit. He also expressed his deepest sympathy to the families and mothers of those affected through his official tweeter account

Currently he has cut short his trip in Geneva where he was attending a meeting on the World Health Assembly and is returning to Senegal.

Amnesty International’s Senegal director Seydi Gassama has said that his organisation has called for an inspection and upgrade for neonatalogy services in hospitals across the Senegal after the death of four babies in Linguere.
