The federal and state governments have cleared the last hurdles for the introduction of a nationwide public transport ticket in the coming year. After consultations with the state leaders on Thursday in Berlin, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz said, “The Germany ticket will come now.” According to Lower Saxony’s Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD), the federal and state governments each want to bear half of the costs.
“We have now removed all the hurdles so that those responsible in the federal states and the transport companies can now do everything to ensure that this progresses quickly and efficiently,” said the Chancellor.
Initially, leaders of the federal and state governments did not provide any specification on the start date for the ticket. Weil said the ticket will come “by the end of the first quarter” of 2023.
Therefore, the ticket for buses and trains in local transport with an introductory price of 49 euros per month is expected to start in the new year. It is intended to tie in with the popular 9-euro ticket from the summer. However, the ticket could become more expensive over time.
Recently, there had been disputes about the financing of the ticket, and according to Scholz, the federal and state governments have agreed on the final details of a hardship fund for companies in the economic crisis.
