Germany: Important information about the 49-euro ticket

UPDATE:
On November 29, the transport ministers of the federal states, decided that the Deutschlandticket would come into force from April 1, 2023. However, the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV) believes that it is more realistic to introduce a cheaper ticket only from May 1, 2023. At the same time, they warned that “open funding issues” regarding the introduction of the ticket still required clarification with the federal government.

The transport ministers also talked on the removal of the mask regulations in public transport. So far, ministers have not agreed on a final date for lifting this obligation. However, the ministers are striving for a uniform nationwide regulation.

Life in Germany. 49-euro ticket in Germany. The introduction of the 49-euro monthly pass, will enable you to travel by passenger trains and buses throughout Germany without restrictions in 2023.

The 49-Euro-Ticket is the successor to the low-cost ticket for 9 euros, which was in force in Germany from June to the end of August 2022. It was the largest discount in the History of local transport in Germany. The Association of German Transport Companies (VDV) reports that late August a total of 52 million tickets had been sold for 9 euros.

The monthly 49-euro bus and train ticket also known as “Klimaticket Deutschland”, will be available to millions of passengers from January 1, 2023. “This would be the perfect time,” Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) said on October 13. The ticket should take effect “as soon as possible”.

This is another initiative to further promote the use of public transport in Germany, as well as ease the burden on the daily commuter. In a way the government wants to compensate for the constant inflation in cost of living. On October 13th, the federal minister of transport and the ministers of individual federal states made the decision to introduce a cheaper ticket.

Which transportations is the 49-euro ticket valid?

The so-called “climate ticket” will be available for purchase digitally or in ticket machines, and just like a ticket for 9 euro, it will be a personal ticket. The 49-euro ticket can be used on all means of public transport and regional trains throughout the country. It will be available as a subscription which can be cancelled monthly.

Like the 9 euro ticket, the 49 euro ticket should also allow you to travel by bus and train all over Germany. However, this only applies to local transport. The ticket will not be valid on long distance trains such as ICE, IC or EC.

What is the difference between a 49 euro ticket and a 9 euro ticket?

What sets apart the EUR 49 ticket from the EUR 9 ticket, is that the EUR 49 ticket will not be a one-way ticket that you have to buy every month. Instead, the ticket will be available as a subscription.

How long will the 49 euro ticket be valid?

According to the transport ministers, they plan a two-year introductory phase. The ticket may become more expensive from the second year onwards. “Dynamization” in the form of automatic inflation compensation is the plan. Transport minister Volker Wissing (FDP) said the more people who buy a ticket, the greater the chance that its price will not rise.
