Germany: A Tidal wave hit the Höllentalklamm (municipality of Grainau) at the foot of the Zugspitze where several people were carried away with the bridge at around 3:45 – confirmed the police.
The police added that the rescue operation from the mountain rescue service is currently in progress and is rescuing several people from the strong waves of water. It is unknown how many people are missing.
The measures are currently being coordinated at the Garmisch-Partenkirchen police station.
It was heavy rain that triggered the wave on Monday afternoon (16th Aug) that also caused the bridge to be pulled down with it and torn down.
The police are yet to disclose whether any people have been harmed by the tidal wave but witnesses reported that up to six people were swept away by the floods. Four people have currently been rescued from the water. However, it is not yet clear how many people are still missing. This is reported by “Bild”.
The bridge was torn away by the floods and apparently had hikers on it according to observers.
In addition to several patrol vehicles from the region, a police helicopter had also been requested. Around 100 helpers are in action.
