German news. Police have warned the public from picking up hitchhikers after a shooting leaves one person dead, sparking a massive manhunt close to Germany’s border with Austria.

The shooting took place at about 8:30pm on Thursday night in Burghausen, the largest town in the region of Altotting. The victim was a 32-year-old man yet to be identified, with no clear motive disclosed.

Police have issued warning that the armed attacker was on the run. He is thought to have fled the scene in a BMW that was later found abandoned in Austria.

The tweet from the police said: “A 32-year-old man was shot dead in front of an amusement arcade in the Lindach industrial park in Burghausen. The armed perpetrator is currently still on the run.”

In search for the shooter, police have set up vehicle checks and have been using thermal imaging cameras and night vision cameras.

“Please report anything suspicious to 110 immediately! We are on site with strong forces and will inform you as soon as we know more.”

According to police tweet a suspect had been arrested in Austria with authorities having believed he had fled over the border.
