Germany: Rhineland becomes first German state to open retail stores from Today

Due to the lockdown , which was extended until March 7,  all shops with goods not belonging to the basic necessities category were closed all over Germany. The authorities of one federal state do not want to wait for the next meeting of Angela Merkel with the prime ministers of all federal states and will lift some restrictions on their own, starting on March 1.

From next week, all retail stores will open there, but customers will have to make an appointment. Two other federal states want to implement the same strategy. Here’s exactly how shopping on a Click & Meet principle is supposed to be

Rhineland-Palatinate will be the first federal state in Germany where all retail stores can be opened from Monday, but each customer will have to make an appointment for a specific time of arrival.

This information was confirmed by the Prime Minister of the Rhineland-Palatinate, Malu Dreyer. Two other federal states, Baden-Württemberg and Hessen, are planning to introduce a similar method of unfreezing the economy.

Rhineland-Palatinate has decided not to wait for a government summit on anti-covid restrictions and to go its own way when it comes to opening stores. According to the first plans of the federal state authorities, from Monday, March 1, after prior appointment, they will be able to shop in furniture, clothing, footwear and jewelry stores. Prime Minister Dreyer said this way of shopping has long been practiced in wedding dress stores.

It is not yet clear how an appointment in shopping centers should look like – whether it will be necessary to book an appointment in a specific store or in the entire mall. On Thursday, the state authorities are to announce how long it will be possible to shop at a given point.

Baden-Württemberg and Hesse are the next two German states that are considering introducing the Click & Meet system in retail stores from next week .

It cannot be ruled out that this purchasing system will be extended to all of Germany in the first phase of the country’s opening up.
