Coronavirus in Germany. Germany’s health minister, Karl Lauterbach, who has led the country’s fight against coronavirus since December, has tested positive for COVID-19.
Early Friday, the Health Minister Karl Lauterbach’s ministry confirmed the 59-year-old has exhibited light symptoms and is working from home.
“The minister is fine, he has only mild symptoms. He is temporarily conducting his official duties from home isolation,”
Lauterbach, a Social Democrat member, has so far received four doses of the COVID vaccine. The ministry said this “shows that with the highly contagious omicron variant, infection cannot be completely ruled out, even with extreme caution.”
Germany has seen a large but recent decline in COVID-19 cases this summer, as a new subvariants of omicron drive infections.
The government said on Wednesday that the coming fall and winter some basic restrictions would remain in place, when the COVID-19 cases are expected to rise again as people spend more time indoors.
