Proof of arrival for asylum-seekers in Germany and why it is very important to have it

The proof of arrival (AKN) is a document issued to all asylum-seekers showing that they have been registered in Germany.

The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) says the document also entitles its holders to obtain state benefits (accommodation, including medical care, food).

Apart from containing an identification number, the document also contains the holder’s most important personal data and information on the responsible reception facility.

Police officers do identify asylum-seekers at the first point of contact at the border. Asylum-seekers who are not identified at the border are normally identified by staff of the Land authorities in reception facilities and staff of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees at reception/registration centres.

The BAMF stresses that “the proof of arrival is neither an identity card nor a replacement identity card.”

It is however important in proving that an asylum-seeker has been registered in Germany and entitles the holder to obtain state benefits.
