Nigerians in Germany: Couple storms into youth welfare office and spills gasoline, backstory

Update: Itoro S. (35) and Blessing DB(32) stormed the Detmold regional court on August 20th and spilled gasoline because their children were taken away from them. We wrote about it HERE. Here’s the full backstory to what happened:

Itogo S. (man) is being accused of distributing gasoline in the stairwell of the agency but he admitted that they did not want to harm anyone, they just wanted someone to finally listen to their please and for them to be able to see their children.

It had been 15 months since they did !!

The two Nigerians in Germany travelled to the country legally and went through the required procedures, so they are wondering why they are facing harsh treatment from the German law.

Subtle acts of racism are something that Africans in Germany have to deal with in their day-to-day life. It is quite unfair but it also streams down to government heads and law enforcement. Black people are marginalised greatly in some places in Germany. (more information after picture)

The couple hired a lawyer, and the case landed at the Higher Regional Court in Hamm. But before a decision could be made there, the situation escalated. Itogo S. filled a detergent bottle with about a litre of gasoline and went to the youth welfare office on Lemgo’s market square with his wife.

Public prosecutor Alexander Görlitz accused the parents of beating several employees of the authority and threatening them with death. Itogo S. is also said to have swept computers and other items from desks in two offices. And when an employee pushed him out of office, he is said to have spilled the gasoline in the stairwell on his way out.

Out on the street, the prosecutor says, he tried to light bedsheets in front of the door – until he and his wife were arrested. The couple came into custody where they have been sitting for six months – she in Bielefeld, he in Detmold.

Itogo S. admitted the main charges on the first day of the trial. “I’m sorry what happened. But I would never have lit the gasoline. I just wanted people to notice us. ”His defense attorney Martin Mauntel said that what his client had done was of course not right. “It was out of sheer desperation.”

Backstory:

A Nigerian couple, Itoro S. (35) and Blessing DB(32) stormed the Detmold regional court on August 20th and spilled gasoline because their children were taken away from them. The couple stormed into the youth welfare office in Lemgo.

In 2013 they came to Germany, started a family, and moved into a small attic apartment in Lemgo. The father worked in a textile company.

In May 2019, Blessing DB had a freak incident when she wreaked havoc at her daughters’ Kindergarten saying she believed a strand of blond hair had been cut off from her daughter’s hair. Upon leaving the teacher’s notified the youth welfare office of her actions.

After a “risk assessment” several social workers drove to the family’s home. The situation immediately escalated. The police were alerted. In the end, the mother was handcuffed and taken away. The three children came into the care of the youth welfare office reported Bild.

“We haven’t seen her since,” the father complained in court. He can’t understand what he’s supposed to have done wrong. His wife feels harassed by the detention, trial and the kidnapping of the children.

The process continues. The verdict is due to be pronounced on March 12th.
