Former Cameroonian international Samuel Eto’o, 39, has announced plans to support the country’s coronavirus combat efforts.
The ex-Barcelona striker who runs a foundation has stated that he will share items including soaps, sanitizers as well as food to help combat the effect of the pandemic in his home country.
100,000 people have been listed as the target for a supply of supplies including soap, sanitizers, and food items, his foundation disclosed in a statement.
“My African brothers and sisters! Coronavirus has taken over our lives. With malice, arrogance and without notice,” Eto’o wrote.
“It knows neither race, religion nor political parties. It kills the rich and the poor. Even in countries where research is done well, the consequences are disastrous. Unpredictable.”
The beneficiaries will be; 50,000 households in four cities – Douala, Buea, Yaoundé and Bafoussam, an additional 50,000 protective face masks will also be supplied – specifically for taxi drivers in the country as they are the most exposed in the country.
The press statement says that fifty thousand washable masks will be distributed to the taxi drivers who are considered as the second most exposed to the virus after doctors.
“This is a serious humanitarian crisis and only via proper sanitation and the distribution of health kits can we curb the coronavirus,” read a statement from the Foundation.

The footballer asked all Africans to abide by the rules set by the World Health Organization for their own safety.
The press statement indicates that about one thousand footballers playing with the 44 clubs of the different league 1 and 2 male and League 1 female championships who are without salaries because of the health crisis will benefit from anti-COVID-19 kits and food items.
According to Samuel Eto’o, these items will be distributed to them through the Cameroon Football Federation, FECAFOOT.
The government continues efforts aimed at curbing the spread. Cameroon is Central Africa’s most impacted with close to 1000 cases as of April 17. 164 recoveries and 22 deaths have been recorded.
Like most countries, borders have been closed and all sports activities suspended but no lockdown imposed yet.
