African footballers. Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi has bagged two prestigious awards – Player of the Month and Goal of the Month Awards for his Premier League club Nottingham Forest.
An overwhelming 83% of the fans voted Awoniyi Player of the Month for August after his three goals in the month under review. The striker also became the first Forest player and only the third African to score in seven consecutive Premier League games.
His goal against Manchester United when he had to sprint from his own half of the pitch to score was also picked as the Goal of the Month.
The striker has scored three goals in the month under review to match a record of scoring in seven straight games. The 26-year-old striker scored against Arsenal, Sheffield United and Manchester United.
He netted 10 goals last season to ensure Forest stayed up in the Premier League.
Taiwo Awniyi was up against Jarrod Bowen (West Ham), James Maddison (Tottenham), Bryan Mbeumo (Brentford), Kaoru Mitoma (Brighton) and Rodri Hernández Cascante (Manchester City) for the awards wrote Scorenigeria.
Who is Taiwo Awoniyi?
Taiwo Micheal Awoniyi (born 12 August 1997) is a Nigerian professional footballer who plays as a striker for Premier League club Nottingham Forest and the Nigeria national team.
In 2010, Awoniyi was voted the Most Valuable Player at a Coca-Cola football competition in London. His performance at the competition was spotted by Seyi Olofinjana who invited him to join the Imperial Soccer Academy.
On 31 August 2015, Awoniyi signed for English club Liverpool for a fee of around £400,000 but was immediately loaned out to German team FSV Frankfurt.
Awoniyi represented Nigeria at the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup and went on to win the tournament, scoring four goals during the competition. He also represented Nigeria at the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand after winning the 2015 African U-20 Championship in Senegal.
