The Nigerian government has announced the suspension of 100 passports of passengers who failed to comply with a mandatory COVID-19 test following the seventh day of their arrival.
The passengers whose nationalities were not identified, were notified of the government imposed six months suspension on their passports with effect from January 1st 2021 to June 30th 2021, Africa.cgtn.com reported.
What is the reason for the Nigerian Government to suspends the 100 passports?
“Defaulting passengers have been notified and will not be allowed to travel using these passports during this period,” said the COVID-19 Presidential Task Force (PTF).
Nigeria has seen a significant increase in the number of new cases since December 2020, where the average monthly cases jumped by 46.3% from an average of 644.5 cases recorded, to 942.8 average cases in January. The surge prompted the Nigerian government to impose tougher measures for passengers travelling into the country particularly from the UK and South Africa.

Upon arrival of passengers from the two countries, the public health authorities process them separately and passengers are required to self-isolate for seven days, after which they will have to undertake a COVID-19 PCR test. Those that test positive for COVID-19 will be referred to isolation, while those negative allowed to leave isolation.
