African community awards. AFRONEWS AWARDS 2023. Dr. Rahab Njeri has been nominated for Best African Scholar in Germany at the AFRONEWS Awards 2023.
Who is Dr Rahab Njeri?
Dr. Rahab Njeri is a Historian, Trainer for Critical Whiteness, Anti- Black Racism, Moderator, Critical Diversity and Founder of KEMET AWARDS FOR ACHIEVEMENT IN AFRICAN LANGUAGES [KAAAL]. She is also charismatic, empathetic, works hard, works smart, innovative, takes initiative, problem solver.
“She is the best scholar and the best historian of African descent we have currently and she is always supportive.”
Dr. Rahab Njeri addresses structural racism and advocates for blacks in Germany at a very high level. She brings our history back in spaces some haven’t even dreamt of.
Besides being an educator that leads by example, Rahab Njeri has cemented herself in service of her community. Her commitment to helping her community near and far is demonstrated by her hard work and dedication. In conjunction with uplifting Black voices and occupying spaces otherwise limited or inaccessible to our community, she still finds the time to moderate platforms, supports events organised by the community and so much more.
Not only can we appreciate her exceptionalism with her life’s work, but she is also a mother of two young children and a friend to those around her.
Dr. Njeri Rahab has a doctorate in history, she is a coach for diversity and intersectionality, anti-discrimination, post-colonialism, critical whiteness and gender and thus became the first African consultant for criticism of racism and anti-discrimination in the Gender & Diversity Management department at the University of Cologne in 2021.
Her main areas of work are; criticism of racism, strategy development for criticism of racism and anti-discrimination, advice on criticism of racism for employees of the University of Cologne.
Dr. Njeri Rahab is also an activist and fantastic role model because she constantly strives to highlight important facts, events, as well as the voices of the marginalised people that have shaped the world historically and continue to do so in the present.
She is a scholar of high repute ,actively involved in promoting Africa’s cultural values and indigenous knowledge in Europe, as well as bridging the knowledge gap on gender equity. She is a dialogue facilitator that is leading the campaign for African women to understand feminism from the African perspective and not from the European paradigm, thereby informing them on how best to lead gender reforms in the continent, by seeking for African solutions to Africa gender issues.
Rahab is a community person, educator who believes in people encourages them to aim higher in life. I think people like Rahab should be recognised for their continued support of people and lifting up people in the society.
Dr Njeri is the first African woman scholar to hold the position of Anti-racism consultant (Referentin for Rassismuskritik)in any German university. She has also been at the forefront to fight racism in German Academia and the need for BIPOC scholars to have permanent contracts.
From a political point of view she also advocates for the visibility of Black women in politics and climate change Politics. She has given talks about Prof. Wangari Maathai but also on bringing back the Utu Philosophy as coined by Prof. Micere Githae Mugo into German Gender studies, African studies and in Race scholarship.
In her city, she sits as a board member of the Healthcare department and was also elected by the Mayor of the city of Koln as a board member of Post colonial Erbe Stadt Koln.
In 2020 she ran as the only African woman for the Kommunalwahl where she ran as a direct candidate for her district. She is also a board member in many organisations such as ANASA e.V., which is from DAAD; Lead Africa or African School in the Netherlands.
She has given talks and papers on the issue of Anti- Black racism which affects all of us regardless of our country of origin but also the importance of empowering ourselves as a people because we are more than racism.
“We have contributed to this country for more than 3 generations and as such we have every right to be here and practice our democratic rights.”
One huge project that she is currently working on in the university of Koln is the unearthing of hidden historical achievements that those who came before us have left in German Academic landscape, for instance Prof. Joseph Major Nyasani from Kenya.
