What is Baobab – zusammensein e.V.?
Baobab – zusammensein e.V. was founded by Kass Kasadi in 2013 to help fellow Africans integrate into the German system and address health problems.
They mainly focus on understanding, counselling and offering support services for immigrants and refugees. Such services can only be effective and goal-oriented if they are understood and accepted by the people to be advised.
However, the context of values and the self-image of people from sub-Saharan Africa differ significantly from the perception and self-construction that is widespread in Germany. It is not enough to provide so-called low-threshold counselling services, even if they are in the respective mother tongue. Often even cultural sensitivity is not enough – it takes cultural affinity to truly understand and be understood.
For a long time, there was no health support structure for African migrants in Lower Saxony that met their requirements and needs. There were no services that taught them how Germany “ticks”, that could convey the feeling of belonging and being cared for and that provided real help for self-help.
In order to close this serious gap, part of the African community came together under the leadership of Kass Kasadi to support African migrants in the long term. This lead to the formation of Baobab – zusammensein e.V., an association that develops perspectives for action on an equal footing and with mutual appreciation for different cultural backgrounds, thus opening up self-efficacy and important scope for action.
A strong focus is on the involvement of the persons to be advised, so that they do not see themselves as consumers, but as actors in their destiny and work on the further development of their own skills.
This methodology offers the opportunity for self-reflection on cultural self-determination and perceptions as well as orientation knowledge in relation to one’s own life situation.
What are the African Community in Germany Awards?
Organised by the AFRONEWS, the newspaper for Africans in Germany, the African Community in Germany Awards celebrate and recognise outstanding achievements of Africans in different fields in Germany. They are a way of appreciating and encouraging Africans who have excelled in different fields and are making a positive contribution to the German society.
The Awards recognise the good work done by African organisations/associations and businesses to promote a positive image of Africa and Africans, facilitate integration of Africans in Germany, promote business opportunities and international cooperation between Germany and African countries.
