French president Emmanuel Macron tests positive for Covid-19

President of France Emmanuel Macron has just tested positive for Covid-19.The president office, the Elysée Palace, said in a statement that 42-year-old took a test after symptoms appeared and will now isolate for seven days.

“The President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron has been tested and diagnosed positive for Covid-19 today. This diagnosis was made following an PCR test performed at the onset of the first symptoms,” the Elysée said in a statement on Thursday morning.

A presidential palace official confirmed that Mr Macron “is still in charge” of running the country and will work remotely.

An overnight curfew is in force in France to help curb the spread of Covid-19.

Data from Johns Hopkins University shows that two million cases of Covid-19 infections have been confirmed in France. The virus has so far killed at least 59,400 people in France.
