Tragic News: Luke Fleurs, South African Football Star, Killed in Car Hijacking

African footballers. South African footballer shot dead. South African footballer Luke Fleurs was tragically shot dead in a car hijacking incident in Johannesburg. His current club, Kaizer Chiefs, confirmed the devastating news on social media and expressed their condolences to his loved ones.

The club’s statement read: “It is with great sadness that we announce the tragic passing of our player, Luke Fleurs, during a hijacking incident in Johannesburg. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time. The South African Police Service (SAPS) is handling the matter, and further details will be communicated in due course. May his soul rest in peace.”

The shooting occurred at a petrol station in the Florida suburb on Wednesday night. Fleurs was waiting at the station when he was approached by armed individuals who demanded his vehicle. After complying, he was shot by the assailants, who fled the scene. Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo stated: “The suspects pointed a firearm at him, forced him out of his vehicle, and shot him once in the upper body.”

Fleurs began his career at Ubuntu Cape Town and spent five years at SuperSport United before joining Kaizer Chiefs last year. He also represented South Africa at the Tokyo Olympics and had previously played at youth levels for the national team.

Despite being rushed to a nearby medical facility, Fleurs was pronounced dead upon arrival. An investigation has been launched by the police, with no arrests made at this stage. Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni has assigned a team of experienced detectives to the case.
