Dozens of firefighters fought several hours Sunday night over a large violent fire in a Berlin subway station that’s underground. The fire department of the German capital wrote on Twitter early Monday morning that the fire was under control.
The fire engulfed the roof of the Onkel Toms Huette station in the city’s Zehlendorf district after it broke into a store near the station, according to a city fire spokesman.
Several nearby houses had to be evacuated, the spokesman said.
One person was stranded at the station and suffered severe burns and was rescued by emergency services, fire spokesman Thomas Kirstein told Berliner Morgenpost. She was transported to a specialist clinic. Three other people were slightly injured. They inhaled smoke and a person was hospitalized for this.
The fire first broke out in a store in the subway station and then spread. It was already clear during the night that at least three shops were affected by the flames. There was a massive amount of flames and smoke and “a rather annoying smell,” Kirstein said. Shortly after midnight, firefighters reported that the fire was under control.
The cause of the fire and the damage are still unclear. The criminal investigation department took over the investigation after firefighters extinguished the fire and removed the station.
Police surrounded the area between Onkel-Tom-Strasse, Riemeisterstrasse and Argentinischer Allee. A residential building on Riemeisterstrasse was evacuated in the evening. Residents were taken out of the emergency services. As the German Red Cross (DRK) Steglitz announced, residents could have returned to their apartments the same night.
