Germany refugee elections 2025. News. On April 12, 2025, the Refugee Council of Baden-Württemberg will hold its spring general meeting and elect new board members and spokespersons. The event will take place at Bürgerräume Stuttgart-West, located at Bebelstraße 22, 70193 Stuttgart.
Among the top nine candidates running for spokesperson roles are two Gambian nationals living in Germany: Bakary Ceesay, a journalist and activist, and Kalilu Banja, a social care worker and cultural entrepreneur.
There are currently more than 18,000 Gambians living in the Baden-Württemberg region. The Refugee Council is a key organization that supports refugees across the area. It offers help through counselling, education, and information on legal and social matters. The council also works to improve refugee rights and policies by engaging with politicians and local communities.
Bakary Ceesay shared that being nominated for a spokesperson role is a serious responsibility. “Sharing clear and useful information with refugees is very important,” he said. “I’m excited to push for refugee policies that are fair, welcoming, and inclusive.”
Kalilu Banja, who has worked with refugees and migrants in Landkreis Böblingen, hopes to bring his experience to the council. “I want to support integration, better living conditions, and more chances for refugees to be part of society,” he said.
The Refugee Council also shared details about the meeting’s program. The main discussion will focus on the “hybrid identities” of refugees. Other topics include health, deportation, the rise of the far right, volunteering, and legal matters. Attendees can join expert groups for deeper conversations and networking breaks will be included throughout the day.
This spring meeting is part of the project “Active for Social Participation”, supported by the Ministry for Social Affairs, Health and Integration, and co-funded by the Deutsche Postcode Lottery.
