Tragedy: restaurant collapse in Majorca. News. What was supposed to be a quiet evening by the beach turned into a tragic disaster. On Thursday evening, a restaurant on the famous Playa de Palma promenade collapsed like a house of cards. At least four people are dead and 16 injured.
Tragedy in Majorca
The victims of the restaurant collapse in Majorca have been identified. In yesterday’s disaster on Playa de Palma, two German women aged 20 and 30, a 23-year-old Spanish woman, and a 43-year-old man from Senegal died. Both German women were likely tourists spending their holidays on Majorca, reports the Tagesschau daily.
The tragedy occurred around 8:30 p.m. in Palma de Mallorca. The ceiling of the bar terrace at Medusa Beach Club, where guests were staying, collapsed. Four people lost their lives as a result of the disaster: a man and three women. Sixteen people were injured, seven of whom are in critical condition and nine are seriously injured, but not life-threatening.
According to the daily “El Pais,” one of the victims is a young man who had just left the gym and stopped for coffee, as he did every day. His friend, who worked at the restaurant, also died. The other two fatalities were women. Spanish authorities report that most of the injured are foreign tourists.
What is the cause of the disaster?
The search for survivors among the rubble of the collapsed building lasted all night. According to Eder García, the chief of the fire brigade in Palma, preliminary findings indicate that the tragedy was caused by an overload of the ceiling on the first floor. Witnesses reported that people were dancing on the terrace at the time of the collapse.
All of Spain shocked by disaster
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his condolences to the victims’ families via the X platform (formerly Twitter), writing: “I am closely following the consequences of this terrible collapse on the beach in Palma.” City authorities and rescuers continued searching for victims until the early morning hours, hoping to find more survivors.
The collapse occurred in the heart of the tourist district of Playa de Palma, a lively area bustling with life, mainly thanks to German tourists since the end of April. Nearby are iconic venues such as “Megapark” and “Bierkönig.”
