Summer 2025 forecast: Extreme heat and prolonged drought ahead

spanish heat wave Germany

Summer 2025 weather forecast. News. Germany is expected to face extreme heat, with a ‘heat dome’ forming in July. This weather pattern traps hot air, leading to high temperatures and little to no rain, increasing the risk of severe drought.

Temperatures above 30 degrees every two days

Forecasts suggest that summer 2025 has a 70% to 100% chance of being one of the hottest since 1993-2016. Temperatures are expected to exceed 30°C on nearly half of the summer days. Typically, cooler summers see around 34 hot days, while moderate ones have about 40. In hotter years, this number rises to at least 48, with extreme summers recording up to 83 days above 30°C. Experts warn of an intensely hot season with a high chance of record-breaking temperatures.

Drought will worsen with extreme temperatures

Experts warn that Germany will face not only extreme heat but also prolonged drought. An atmospheric blockage over Southeastern Europe will push hot air toward Central Europe, leading to extended dry periods with little to no rain. Even when occasional showers occur, the soil will struggle to retain moisture, significantly increasing the risk of drought, according to The Weather Channel.

Spring rains, essential for combating drought

Experts emphasize the need for rainfall in April, May, and possibly June to reduce the impact of the summer heatwave. After an exceptionally dry March, with some regions seeing critically low rainfall, every shower is now vital for restoring soil moisture. Without enough groundwater reserves, the heatwave’s effects on agriculture and ecosystems could be even more severe.

Summer 2025 forecasts are concerning, with Germany facing extreme heat and little rainfall. Authorities and residents should take steps to conserve water and protect crops as the country prepares for one of the toughest summers in recent decades.
