Merkel introduces new coronavirus restrictions in Germany

Merkel introduces new coronavirus restrictions due to the growing number of infections with the Sars-CoV-2 virus. The federal government has decided to make this move to curb any new infections. Here’s what changes:

After a decline over the summer, the number of coronavirus infections in Germany has increased again. “Due to falling temperatures, the increased number of people staying indoors in autumn and winter, and the approaching flu season, we must now be especially careful,” warned the federal and federal governments on Tuesday.

“This is particularly important for private celebrations and parties such as weddings, which have recently proved to be one of the main causes of local outbreaks of infection,” said German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

There will be no loosening restrictions

The obligation to cover the nose and mouth in public spaces will be maintained. Failure to comply with this recommendation is and will be consistently sanctioned – it was agreed on Tuesday.

Providing false data in bars and restaurants is to be punished with a fine of at least 50 euros, announced Angela Merkel after Tuesday’s meeting with representatives of federal state authorities. The data is collected to track possible contacts with infected people. Thuringia demands that everyone across the country be clearly informed that personal data is only collected to protect against infection.

Restrictions on the sale of alcohol

The federal government recommends that in areas where there is a large increase in coronavirus infections, there should be restrictions on the consumption of alcohol outdoors and in the evening hours.

Celebrations – restrictions on the number of participants

The federal states should establish upper limits on the number of participants in private celebrations. If more than 35 new infections per 100,000 people in the ward  occur  within  seven days , the number of participants in residential parties should be limited to 50. For private home admissions, it is recommended that the number of people not exceed 25.

If more than 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants occur within seven days, the  number of participants in public events or rented venues should be limited to 25, and for private homes the “recommended upper limit” should then be 10.

Longer distance, meticulous hygiene and frequent ventilation

Angela Merkel said that due to the upcoming flu season and the increasing number of coronavirus infections, it is recommended to maintain a greater social distance, i.e. 1.5 meters, scrupulously follow the rules of hygiene, wear protective masks in public spaces and frequently ventilate rooms.
