During the press conference, Minister Faeser emphasized the need for Germany to enhance its national border controls before the new EU asylum system starts. This system aims to improve the protection of the EU’s external borders. Faeser highlighted that the new controls will help better manage the return of people trying to cross the borders illegally, which is important for reducing illegal migration and addressing threats from Islamist terrorism and cross-border crime.

Although these measures might seem unilateral, Faeser assured that Germany is committed to working closely with its neighbouring countries. She also mentioned views from CDU leader Friedrich Merz and former Federal Constitutional Court President Hans-Jürgen Papier, who believe that German law might take precedence over EU law on domestic security issues.
