Germany’s green party has nominated Annalena Baerbock to succeed Chancellor Angela Merkel after a long wait but who is Annalena Baerbock.
Annalena Baerbock is from the Eastern state of Brandenburg, she was born on December 15th 1980 in the small town of Pattensen in Lower Saxony. She has a husband and two daughters.
She is woman driven by ambition, tough, talented and headstrong. Annalena is a natural athlete and even came in third place at Germany’s national trampolining championship.
She lived in the US for a short stint of time and studied law in Hanover before going to the London School of Economics where she specialised in International law. She also worked as a journalist for the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung.
Annalena Baerbock was the office manager of Elisabeth Schroedter MEP and has worked as a foreign and security policy advisor for the Bundestag parliamentary group of ALLIANCE 90 / THE GREENS.
She was one of the Green delegates made her one of the party’s two co-leaders.
Her co-candidate was Robert Habeck who they have led together since 2018 which led to the party having a wave of popularity.
Baerbock has only picked up the pace ever since achieving her position. The 40-year old has sharpened her political profile and projected herself as a climate change activist spreading the message through her Facebook page.
Annalena has dealt with unfavourable conversations while in the seat like foreign policy issues and she has also spoken up against the threats posed by far-right populism and xenophobia.
In the year 2019 Annalena Baerbock came out triumphant over her co-leader achieving a staggering 97 percent backing from the delegates while he attained an impressive 90 percent.
Since she became party co-leader, the Greens have been polling comfortably above the 20% mark. Add to that the party’s good showing in European elections, as well in as regional votes in Germany – DW.
