Germany: Editor-in-chief of BILD fired with immediate effect

Bild editor-in-chief Julian Reichelt fired: Axel Springer fired Julian Reichelt, 41, from his duties as editor-in-chief of the German newspaper BILD with immediate effect. The reason for the publisher’s decision was that Reichelt did not separate private matters from professional matters and that he had lied to the management of the media group.

The editor-in-chief of Europe’s best-selling newspaper, Reichelt will be replaced by 37-year-old Johannes Boie, who previously headed the editorial board of Welt am Sonntag.

The Media company head, Axel Springer, explained that the decision to dismiss Julian Reichelt from the post of editor-in-chief of Bild was influenced by “new information about his current behaviour” and the results of an internal investigation.

After examining new reports, it turned out that Reichelt “did not clearly separate private matters from professional matters.” He was also accused of lying to the company’s management.

“Thus, the chosen path of” cultural renewal “in” Bild “is no longer possible with Julian Reichelt, said Springer’s boss Mathias Doepfner in a statement.

During Spring this year, several Bild employees had reported allegations of abuse of power by Reichelt. In March, he was released at his own request, and the publishing house began an internal investigation.

Then the company determined that the editor-in-chief of “Bild” had committed “management errors”, but they did not indicate any serious offences. For this reason, Reichelt was brought back to work in March

In the following months, however, new information came to light regarding, inter some love affairs with female employees, as well as reports that Reichelt was abusing power and sexually harassing his female employees.

Bild is the best-selling newspaper in Europe and seventeenth in the world by circulation. The magazine has been published since 1952.
