Deutsche Bahn special deal. The European elections are coming soon, and Deutsche Bahn has a special deal: half a million extra discounted tickets for travel across Europe will be available this week. Here’s how to get them and what you need to know.

Cheap tickets for train travel

Traveling abroad in your own car can be stressful and expensive, with costs for fuel, road tolls, vignettes, and toilet breaks adding up to several hundred euros. Flights within Europe are also worth reconsidering for environmental reasons. However, if you visit Deutsche Bahn this week, you have a great chance of getting a (Super-)Sparpreis-Ticket for just €19.90 or €24.90.

In celebration of the European elections, Deutsche Bahn is offering an extra 500,000 tickets to various destinations across Europe. This means you can reach around 150 cities and holiday spots directly and conveniently from Germany by train. Children up to 14 years old can travel for free. But hurry—the promotion only lasts until Election Day, Sunday, June 9, 2024, at 23:59.

Promotion rules

There’s a small catch: the increased number of discounted tickets only applies to train travel starting from September 2, 2024—after the peak season. If you want to travel during the peak summer or school holidays, you may have to pay significantly more. Tickets can be booked up to six months in advance.

With a “Sparpreis Europa” or “Super Sparpreis Europa” ticket you can travel to the following 16 countries:

  • Belgium
  • Denmark
  • France
  • Italy
  • Croatia
  • Luxembourg
  • Netherlands
  • Austria
  • Poland
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia
  • The czech republic
  • Ukraine
  • Hungary

There are direct connections to cities like Brussels, Paris, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Prague, Vienna, Zurich, and even South Tyrol.

Children travel for free

Deutsche Bahn typically allows children up to 14 years old to travel for free when accompanied by someone aged 15 or older. Children aged 6 and above must be included in the booking. When utilizing a City Ticket in Germany, children pay the children’s fare for a single journey within the specified network.

Children aged 6 to 14 who travel unaccompanied receive a 50% discount on the adult fare for the German segment of the journey.

Bahncard holders enjoy additional benefits

BahnCard 25, BahnCard 50, and BahnCard 100 holders enjoy an additional 25% discount on the German segment of their journey, except for the “Super Sparpreis Europa Frankreich,” which is not eligible for the BahnCard 100 discount.

In light of the 2024 European Football Championship, Deutsche Bahn has introduced the Fan BahnCard 25, as reported by CHIP.de. This card, priced at €19.90 (or €39.90 for 1st class), serves as a trial BahnCard for three months. Should Germany emerge as European champions, its validity will be extended for a year at no extra cost.

However, if another national team emerges victorious and subscribers fail to cancel their subscription at least four weeks before the end of the trial period, the Fan BahnCard will automatically convert to a regular subscription. The Fan BahnCard 25 is available for purchase until June 16, 2024.
