Biggest fuel guzzler in your car. Traffic Fines. Did you know that your everyday driving habits can greatly affect how much fuel your car uses? Many of us don’t realize that certain car features or the way we drive can significantly raise travel costs. With fuel prices rising, finding ways to save money is more important than ever. ADAC highlights common mistakes that make our cars less efficient. Here’s how to avoid the biggest mistakes and drive more cheaply and environmentally friendly.
The Biggest Fuel Guzzler in Your Car
Unnecessary weight in a car is one of the main reasons for higher fuel consumption. ADAC points out that for every extra 100 kilograms, a car uses about 0.3 liters more fuel per 100 kilometers. What does this mean in real terms? It’s a good idea to regularly check your trunk and remove any items you don’t need.
An example is a full-size spare tire, which weighs around 20 kilograms. If you don’t often need it, consider replacing it with a repair kit that includes sealant and a compressor. This change will not only lighten the car but also free up space.

The Hidden Enemy of Your Savings
According to ADAC, one of the biggest causes of high fuel consumption is the roof rack. At a speed of 80 km/h, it can increase fuel use by about 11%. At higher speeds, like 130 km/h, the extra fuel consumption can reach up to 2 liters per 100 kilometers. The solution? Once your trip is over, it’s a good idea to remove the roof box as soon as possible if you no longer need it.
In winter, it’s important to thoroughly remove ice and snow from your car. Why? Snow buildup adds extra weight to the vehicle and reduces its aerodynamics, leading to higher fuel consumption. ADAC also reminds us that leftover snow and ice can be dangerous to other drivers when it falls off while you’re on the road.
Small Changes, Big Savings
Saving fuel begins with simple everyday habits. Removing unnecessary weight, taking down the roof box after a trip, and maintaining the car’s aerodynamics are easy steps that can significantly cut down on driving costs. By following these tips, you’ll not only save money but also help reduce your environmental impact.
