Coronavirus in Italy: When will new infections be eliminated?

Italy may start seeing a drop in new coronavirus infections in the second or third week of May, experts have revealed.

Italy has so far registered 101,739 COVID-19 infections and 11,591deaths. A total of14,620 people have recovered.

Based on the current trends, new infections throughout Italy may be fully eliminated between 5th and 16th May 2020.

There are however some regions including Veneto and Piedmont which may eliminate new infections in the first half of April. Experts are optimistic that almost all regions may reach that level by the end of April.

The government of Italy has imposed stricter measures to stop the infection. Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has hinted that the country’s lockdown will be extended beyond the current end-date of April 3.

The current lockdown rules bar people from leaving their homes except to get food or medicines or to perform other essential services or to go to work. Throughout the county only grocery stores and pharmacies are the only stores that remain open.

The measures taken to close schools and universities in the country and to restrict movement throughout Italy are most likely to be prolonged.

Schools and universities which were previously scheduled to reopen on 3rd April are likely to remain closed until 3rd May or even later. There are fears that schools in Italy may not even reopen this academic year.
