If you or your family member needs urgent medical treatment, you can do either of the following:

1. In case of life-threatening or other serious situations, you can dial 112. This is a toll-free number which connects you with the emergency medical service. The number is valid throughout Germany. Once you dial 112, an ambulance will arrive within 15 minutes.

2. In case the situation is not serious, you are advised to go directly to a hospital Accident and Emergency (A&E) department. In Germany the A&E departments are called Notaufnahme and they are open day and night.

During the weekend, on holidays or during the night, on-call help is available from a hospital, physician or pharmacy in your area. You can consult local newspapers in your area since they normally publish daily listings of the physicians and pharmacies that are on call.
