German Prime ministers reject the harsh restriction plan backed by Merkel and present a counter-draft

On Monday, November 16, at 14:00, the leaders of the Länder and Chancellor Angela Merkel met to discuss the situation of the pandemic and possible new measures to be taken.

According to the first information, the meeting did not have the expected result for Merkel, her proposals for new restrictions were rejected, and the prime ministers present a counter-draft of the resolution proposed by the chancellor, with modifications, according to Merkur.de.

Why did the German Prime ministers reject harsh restriction plan?

Unlike the federal government’s proposal, the Länder’s proposal only provides for an appeal to the population to reduce contacts.

The proposal to quarantine people for five to seven days in case of cold symptoms has been deleted. In addition, the rule that children are only allowed to meet a friend should be repealed.

The federal government wants stricter contact restrictions, according to which one household can meet only one other household and a maximum of two people. The tightening of the crown rules in schools, as provided for in Merkel’s resolution, will be completely erased.

A first provisional conclusion should be drawn at Chancellor Angela Merkel’s meeting with the Land prime ministers.

The new crown measures in Germany, which were decided on October 28, are in force from November 2. The aim now is to determine whether the requirements are sufficient or whether they need to be stricter.
