Germany: RKI announces new list of high risk areas

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) made a few changes to the list of coronavirus high risk countries from the 8th of November. Here are the high risk areas since the ‘new’ change:

  • Denmark: all of Denmark with the exception of the Faroe Islands and Greenland is now a risk area.
  • Estonia: the Ida-Viru region is now considered a risk area.
  • Greece: The regions of Attica, Central Macedonia, East Macedonia and Thrace, Epirus and Thessaly are now also considered risk areas.
  • Italy: Italy as a whole is now a risk area.
  • Latvia: The Pierīga region is now also a risk area.
  • Lithuania: all of Lithuania with the exception of the Utena district is now a risk area.
  • Norway: the province of Oslo is considered a risk area.
  • Portugal: all of Portugal with the exception of the autonomous Azores and Madeira is now a risk area.
  • Sweden: all of Sweden with the exception of the province of Västernorrland is now considered a risk area.


The classification as a risk area is based on a joint analysis and decision by the Federal Ministry of Health, the Foreign Office and the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Home Affairs.

The states listed below are currently designated as areas in which there is an increased risk of infection with SARS-CoV-2. In brackets it is listed since when the area was considered a risk area.

For people entering Germany who have been in a risk area at any time within the last 14 days prior to entry, there may be an obligation to segregate them in accordance with the respective quarantine regulations of the responsible federal states.
