Germany: Another large Christmas market cancelled

The Bavarian city of Nuremberg also cancelled its famous Christmas market, one of Germany’s best-known and a major tourist draw, AP reports.

Following the cancellation of Berlin’s most popular Christmas market a few days ago, the Christkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg was also cancelled this year.

City officials originally wanted the bustling Christkindlesmarkt to go ahead under strict hygiene rules, but Mayor Marcus Koenig said they concluded it would send the wrong signal as virus cases rise.

“This decision is very difficult for us. The Christkindlesmarkt with its great tradition belongs to Nuremberg,” Koenig said.

We wrote about the cancellation of the largest and most popular Christmas market in Berlin this year HERE . This is not the only Weihnachtsmarkt that will not be held this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It is worth mentioning that along with the  Dresden Striezelmarkt, the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt is one of the  oldest Christmas markets  in Germany. Every year it is visited by over 2 million tourists.

Until a few weeks ago, city officials were hoping that the Baby Jesus Fair could be held with appropriate precautions, but the growing number of coronavirus infections is approaching the threshold of 100 and more infections per 100,000 inhabitants in 7 days.
