Gambian striker Assan Ceesay scores as FC Zurich wins Swiss Super League

Assan Ceesay, Gambian international footballer and his club, FC Zürich have been confirmed as Champions of the Swiss Super League for the 2021/22 season with 72 points following their 2-0 win over second place, Basel (56) on 1st May 2022.

The Scorpions striker scored the opener and registered his 25 goals involvement (18 goals, 7 assists) for his team in 32 league matches so far this season. 

Assan scored the first goal of the match with a looping header five minutes before the break. With 72 points, and just four matches remaining before the end of the season, Zurich, who last won the championship in 2009, have an unassailable 16-point lead. 

The 28-year-old Assan is a professional footballer playing for Gambian Football Team and as forward for FC Zúrich.

The last time Zurich won a title was in the domestic cup of the 2017/18 season and had another Gambian in their ranks in Pa Modou Jagne who played the whole match in a 2-1 final win over Young Boys of Bern. Ceesay joined them from Lugano FC the following season.

The former Gamtel football club striker is currently the second leading scorer in the division with 18 goals, just four behind United States attacker Jordan Pefok. 

He appeared in the vast majority of Zurich’s matches this season, playing in 31 of the 32 games, starting 29 of them, accumulating 2,166 minutes in total.
