Coup attempt foiled in Niger just before presidential inauguration

Niger’s authorities have foiled an attempted coup just a few days before the inauguration of President-elect Mohamed Bazoum. Our sources on the ground confirm that at least five people were killed.

The foiled coup was an attempt to overthrow the newly elected president who is set to be sworn in on 2nd April 2021.

Niger’s outgoing president Mahamadou Issoufou, recently won 2020 Ibrahim Prize, the Africa’s top prize for leadership. His decision to quit after serving two terms has enabled Niger to have the first democratic transition between elected leaders since its independence from France on 3rd August 1960.
