The Grammy’s brought on a new reckoning for African artists. The award recognised Nigerian artist that have made waves in the music industry winning awards and even getting nominated this year. Here is the list of Nigerian artists to win an award in the Grammy’s 2021:
Nigerian artist Burna Boy won Best Global Music Album for his album Twice As Tall at the Premiere Ceremony of the 63rd GRAMMY Awards.
This marks the Nigerian star’s first career GRAMMY award win. Burna Boy becomes among the first winners of the recently renamed category, formerly known as Best World Music Album.
Later, Burna gave a fire performance to close out the Premiere Ceremony, featuring two Twice As Tall tracks.
Artists who won or received nominations for their contributions to foreign work were also recognised by the Grammy’s with Album of the year that went to ColdPlay for the album ‘Everyday life’. They featured female Nigerian powerhouse Tiwa Savage who is commonly known for hits like ‘Dorobucci’ and ‘Girl Next Door’ featuring Kenyan band Sauti Sol.
Also featured on the album was Olufela Olufemi Anikulapo Kuti, popularly known as Femi Kuti, who is a Nigerian musician born in London and raised in Lagos. He is the eldest son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.
Another collaboration winner is Made Kuti – Fela’s grandson and Femi’s son – grew up in The New Afrika Shrine in Lagos, studied at Trinity Laban Conservatoire in London, and has played in Femi’s Positive Force band from a young age.
Best Music video was bagged by the song “Brown Skin Girl” by Beyonce, Saint Jhn & Nigerian artist Wizkid featuring Blue Ivy Carter ( Beyonce and Jay-Z’s daughter).
The song featured Wizkid and rocked the airwaves getting 32M views and more on Youtube.
