Coronavirus: Number of cases in Germany rises to 57,298

Cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Germany continue to rise. The virus has so far infected 57,298 and killed 455 people, latest report from the German disease and epidemic control center, Robert Koch Institute (RKI) shows.

The incidence (cases per 100,000) of COVID-19 is highest in Hamburg (112) followed by Bavaria (107) and Baden-Württemberg (99).

The virus continues to attack mainly people aged between 35 and 59 years old; attacking more men than women.

Out of the 455 coronavirus related deaths reported in Germany, 303 (67%) were men and 151 (33%) women. The median age was 82 years, though the cases ranged from 28 to 100 years.

Of all deaths, 397 (87%) were in people aged 70 years or older.

The most common manifestations are cough (53%), fever (41%), rhinorrhoea (23%) and pneumonia (2%).

The report by the Robert Koch Institute shows that an estimated 13,500 persons have recovered from COVID-19 infection.

“At the global and the national level, the situation is very dynamic and must be taken seriously. Severe and fatal courses occur in some cases. The number of cases in Germany continues to increase,” says Robert Koch Institute. It however points out the “probability of serious disease progression increases with increasing age and existing previous illnesses.”
