The Nigerian Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 has disclosed that there are indications that Nigeria has entered the second wave of the infection and this might require a renewed COVID-19 lockdown in Nigeria.
According to the PTF and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, “The events and statistics of the last two weeks within and outside Nigeria, have been very mixed.
On one hand, the cheering News of the COVID-19, while on the other hand, we have witnessed increase in the number of infections home and abroad”.
“The threat is upon humanity and the progress made in the global health sector in the last five decades or more. In Nigeria, it’s obvious we have entered the second wave of COVID-19 infections and we stand the risk of not just loosing the gains from the hard work of the last nine months but also loosing the precious lives of our citizens,” he added.

The 806 new cases putting Lagos on the highest (287) has forced Lagos State Government to shut down Schools, Night clubs, and others with immediate effect. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu who’s the first governor to react to the second wave of the COVID-19 in Nigeria released a statement on Friday, December 18, thereby ordering that all places of worship (Churches, Mosques, etc.) must ensure that no gathering exceeds two hours, and also that no gathering exceeds 50% of the maximum capacity of the venue.
The presidential task force (PTI) believes that if we do the right thing as a nation and adhere to the NPIs, and step up our testing and detections, loss of lives will be minimized and the rising curve will begin to flatten. We are in a potentially difficult stage of the COVID-19 resurgence; accessing the hope offered by the arrival of the vaccine is still sometime ahead. Nigerians in the diaspora and in Nigeria will have to accept the fact that detty December that they always look forward to might not be enjoyable this year due to the second wave of the COVID-19.
