Starting in November 2024, picking up your ID card will no longer require a stressful in-person visit to state institutions. Instead, you can request to have the documents sent to you by post, making the process much more convenient. A small fee will apply for this service.

Self-Determination law in effect from November 2024: Simple declaration required

Starting November 1, 2024, the new self-determination law will allow individuals in Germany to change their gender and first name at registry offices with a simple declaration, without needing medical reports, certificates, or court orders. There is a three-month waiting period, and requests have been possible since August. The law is designed to simplify the process for trans, intersex, and non-binary people, after years of debate before being passed on April 12, 2024.

Federal council presidency change

On November 1, 2024, the Federal Council will welcome a new president as Anke Rehlinger, the Prime Minister of Saarland, takes over from Manuela Schwesig, the Premier of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The presidency of the Federal Council is often regarded as the fourth highest office in Germany, following the Federal President, the President of the Bundestag, and the Federal Chancellor. This position rotates annually among the heads of government of the 16 federal states.

Pay increase for bank employees and officials

Starting November 1, 2024, good news is in store for the 60,000 employees of public banks in Germany, as their wages will rise by a total of 11.5% in three stages, according to the Verdi union. This new collective agreement will apply to employees across 63 banking institutions nationwide. Additionally, civil servants in Lower Saxony will see a basic salary increase of €200, along with a 4.76% rise in some allowances and a €100 increase in basic amounts for trainees, as reported by T-online.de.

Drones for animal protection: New regulations

Starting November 20, 2024, the use of drones equipped with thermal cameras will be permitted under specific conditions to protect deer and other animals. A key requirement is that drones must maintain a minimum distance of 150 meters from residential and commercial areas. This new regulation aims to address the issue of animals being injured or killed by mowers after taking shelter in tall grass. By using drones, farmers can more effectively spot animals and avoid accidents.

New economic identification number

Starting in November 2024, individuals working in business and corporate settings will receive a new business identification number designed to simplify communication between companies and government authorities. The Federal Central Tax Office will automatically assign this number. If you don’t receive your number by the end of November, there’s no need to worry, as it is not yet mandatory to provide it. The issuance of these numbers is expected to continue until 2026, according to the Federal Ministry of Finance.
