Weekend Traffic Standstill in Hamburg: Elbe Tunnel and Köhlbrand Bridge to Be Fully Closed
Drivers planning to travel by car in Hamburg this weekend should get ready for major disruptions. The Elbe Tunnel and the Köhlbrand Bridge will be completely closed due to bridge work. The Elbe Tunnel will shut down at 10 PM on Friday and will remain closed until 5 AM on Sunday.
Additionally, the section of the A7 motorway between the Hamburg-Stellingen and Hamburg-Heimfeld junctions will also be closed. This work is needed to install temporary pedestrian and cycle bridges around Baurstraße in the Bahrenfeld district. It is part of the construction of the Altona sound tunnel, which will be over two kilometers long, and the expansion of the A7 motorway to eight lanes.
Furthermore, the Köhlbrand Bridge will close for maintenance and repair work starting at 9 PM on Friday. The bridge is expected to reopen to traffic on Monday morning at 5 AM. This will be the sixth, and likely the last, closure of the bridge for work this year.

Detours have been set up
A detour is redirecting traffic from the Maschener Kreuz south of Hamburg to the Neumünster Süd junction via the A1, A21, and B205 motorways, according to MOIN.DE. Within the city, drivers can use the bridges over the Elbe.
It’s important to note that the Freihafenelbe Bridge, which runs alongside the railway bridges over the Norderelbe, has been closed to vehicles weighing more than 7.5 tons since Thursday. This closure is due to the poor condition of the bridge, which dates back to 1926, leading the HPA port authorities to take these necessary measures.
