If your phone is affected, WhatsApp will notify you in the app, asking you to update your operating system. If an update isn’t possible, the only option will be to switch to a newer device. Check the list to see if your phone will lose access to the popular messaging app.
As WhatsApp continues to introduce new updates, older smartphones with outdated software struggle to keep up. To maintain security and functionality, Meta ends support for devices that can no longer meet these requirements.

WhatsApp stops working on these devices
If your smartphone has an outdated operating system, you may soon receive a notification that WhatsApp will stop working. Meta has confirmed that the app will no longer be supported on certain Apple and Android devices that don’t meet the minimum system requirements.
- Android devices running versions older than 5.0
- iPhones with iOS older than 15.1
To check if your phone is still compatible, go to Settings and look for the “About phone” section. There, you’ll find the operating system version installed on your device.
