Germany urgently needs scientists and IT specialists. Here’s how to apply

A host of German companies are looking for scientists and IT specialists. The country is facing a shortage of STEM graduates. The acronym STEM refers to the fields of knowledge – science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Make it in Germany, the portal for international qualified professionals says such professionals are particularly sought-after and have good career prospects on the German labour market.

These professionals are needed by the research institutes and the industry.

In fact the industry is finding it increasingly hard to secure graduates with a degree in STEM subjects.

At the moment there is a substantial demand for engineers, scientists, mathematicians, and IT experts.

“Make it in Germany” says the country’s carmakers and engineering companies, chemical and pharmaceutical industries, biotech and nanotech sectors, are all in need of first-rate scientists.

Many larger companies in Germany need IT specialists to perform a range of tasks including programming advanced machine-control systems, writing company software, ensuring the security of complex systems, and managing the ever larger field of online applications.

Banks and insurance companies in Germany also have great demand for mathematicians.

“No matter which area – job prospects for graduates in the STEM subjects are favourable in Germany,” says Make it in Germany. “STEM graduates are much more likely to be offered a permanent contract when entering the job market and have a significantly higher earnings potential. Average starting salaries for STEM graduates are between €35,000 and €40,000 a year. After 10 years of professional experience, salary levels rise to an average of about €70,000.”

If you have obtained a degree in your home country in one of the STEM fields, you may apply to have it verified by the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB). Once this is done, you’ll be able to show on your job applications which German educational qualification your degree corresponds to. Click here for further information on how to go about it.
