The British covid variant of the coronavirus is spreading more and more in Europe. It is already the dominant strain of incl. in Great Britain, Italy and Sweden.

Until two weeks ago, the mutation rate of the UK covid variant was 6%. Today (February 17, 2021) it has risen to over 22 percent in Germany. In contrast, the mutation that first appeared in South Africa is much less common. It is recorded in 1.5 percent of infections in Germany. This data is based on 23,000 positive test results analysed by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg estimates that variant B.1.1.7 is 30 to 50% more contagious.
