Berlin set to host the colourful multicultural Kenako African Festival

The KENAKO African festival in Berlin will be held for the seventh time this year in August on Berlin’s Alexanderplatz. The event shall involve an African marketplace with tents and a stage that offers its guests a varied program.

Admission is free and it will be taking place from 12 – 22 August 2021 and 10 AM to 10 PM.

For this year the motto for the Kenako Festival is “perspectives on site”

The Kenako African Festival will show the colourful cultural life in Africa but with the motto “Perspectives on site” which draws attention to existing problems in Africa.

The festival brings different cultures closer to one another and to establish contacts as well as providing a platform for Africans in Germany to get to know each other. The organisers encourage discussions and exchanges with one another. The governing mayor of Berlin, Michael Müller, is the patron of the festival.

‘House Girl’ by Ghanain/British Koby Adams is an interesting short film based on the ‘African diaspora’

The Kenako African Festival will invoke the African flair and in the market square, visitors can purchase hand-made works of art, clothing, cosmetic and culinary delights. the stage is set to offer a cultural programs of music, dance and theatre.

Workshops, readings, file screenings and pale discussions are also on the agenda as part of the Global Learning project.

The Kenako African Festival should bring together different Africans in Germany with a common goal and interest. Last years event was held virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic but this year’s should have people interacting safely on a one on one.

The Kenako Festival will have a series of panel discussions that will have topics like:

  • Colonial Medicine and Persistent Structures
  • African medical students and doctors in Germany – brain drain in medicine?
  • Medical organisations at the humanitarian level in Africa, cooperation on equal terms?
  • The field of tension between medicine and business – the economic effects of the corona measures in Nigeria.
  • Migration due to medical factors.
  • South Africa: between revolutionary operating theatres and a lack of care – how does that fit together?
  • Alternative medicine and prejudice about traditional medicine in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Reading / poetry slam

There will also be a children’s program at the Kenako Africa Festival on Sunday, August 15, at 10:00, Mestre PimPim and his team will be working Capoeira sessions for children and adults.
