Work in Germany. Strike in local transport in Germany. German trade union Verdi and the Fridays for Future youth movement have organized a strike that will disrupt public transport in six German states.
The strike on Friday March 3, is aimed at demanding for higher wages, better working conditions and an overhaul of transport policies. Verdi Vice President Christine Behle, recently referred to a wage increase offer from federal and municipal employers as “a slap in the face to employees” and “an unparalleled challenge.”
“Employees will not put up with this and will now step up their fight for their demands,” she said in a statement, adding that they should include better working conditions, higher wages and sustainable investment in municipal public transport by the states and the federal government.
The states that will experience disruptions are Baden-Württemberg, Hesse, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saxony. Strikes are common in Germany’s transport system, but it is unusual for so many states to be involved at once.
Fridays for Future joined the Verdi union in calling for a strike on Friday, saying its own protest for a review of transport policies would expand to 200 sites. The youth movement is calling on the government to adhere to climate targets enshrined in the Paris Agreement, arguing that massive investment in new highway projects should be halted and redirected to low-emission alternatives.
