Germany is preparing for vaccination. Street people and asylum seekers could be included in the list of priority categories

Germany Covid vaccine: A vaccine developed against the new coronavirus, which German authorities hope to obtain in the coming months, should be given first to at-risk groups, such as the elderly, asylum seekers, street people and patients with pre-existing diseases, according to an independent committee of experts.

Hospital and asylum workers should also be included in the first vaccination line, representatives of the German Ethics Council said in a statement on Monday.

This is because asylum seekers have been facing harsh conditions in asylum centres that pay no regard to restrictions set and hence are more prone to contract the virus and pass it on to others. We wrote about it here >>

There comes urgent need to make sure that asylum workers do not spread the virus to seekers and vice versa due to interaction. This also support people living in the street that are homeless as they are also high risk to exposure.

“This Germany Covid vaccine prioritisation must be set by policy makers based on recommendations,” said Thomas Mertens. Any final decision should be made by “those who hold the syringe,” he added.

The first vaccines developed against COVID-19 could be licensed in early 2021, according to experts.

Germany is home to one of the main competitors currently conducting phase 3 clinical trials and which are being analysed by the European Union’s regulatory authority for medicines. An anti-COVID-19 vaccine was developed by the German company BioNTech in collaboration with an American partner, the Pfizer group.
